Westmoreland Wins Region 20 Championship
Saturday afternoon the Wolfpack Cross Country team took to their home course to host the NJCAA Division III Championship. Anne Arundel, Howard, Penn Highlands, and CCAC were all represented at the meet.
The men started the meet off running their home 8k course for the first time this season. Sophomore Dante Frescura, last year's Region 20 Champion, led the Wolfpack with a second-place finish. Next for the Wolfpack was Freshman Frank Benko in fourth place, and Sophomore Peyton Hause placed fifth. Frescura, Benko, and Hause were all named to the All Region 20 team for their performance. To round out the men's team Joe Barrick, Jared Bowman, and Micah Conroy placed seventh, eighth, and ninth places. Robbie Halinka crossed the line in 14th place, while Deklyn Simms, Andy Petrazzi, and Jon Kiggins placed 19th, 20th, and 26th. Along with his All Region award, Frescura became Westmoreland's second two-time WPCC Conference Champion.
The Men's team won the region team title for the first time since 2018 with just 26 point. Penn Highlands placed 2nd with 51 points, Howard 73, and Anne Arundel 85.
In the women's 5k, only two of the Wolfpack's 6 women took part in the meet. Placing 3rd and 4th was the freshman duo of Larissa Vozar and Brynne Davis. Vozar crossed the line with a time of 24:09, and Davis with a time of 24:45. These times were also good enough to place them as members of the All Region 20 team, but also placed them first and second in the WPCC Conference standings.
With their performances this season, the men's and women's teams will now travel to Holyoke Massachusetts for the NJCAA Division III Cross Country National Championships on November 5th. This will be Westmoreland's final trip to the Division III National Championship before moving to Division II in the fall of 2023.
