WOLFPACK SWEEP ALLEGANY TO OPEN 2019 SEASON

YOUNGWOOD, Pa. - After rallying for a 6-5 win in eight innings to open the doubleheader, the Westmoreland County Community College softball team had four players with two or more RBIs, as they scored a 16-3 game-two victory over visiting Allegany College of Maryland Sunday afternoon in the opening games of the season for the Wolfpack.

The first game was a thriller from the start. It was tied 4-4 after seven innings and Allegany managed to score to take a 5-4 lead. Westmoreland started the inning with a runnner on second and Chelsi Bartlow brought her in with a triple. The next batter Hannah Hempfield ripped a game-winning double to plate Bartlow and give the Wolfpack the 6-5 victory.

Hempfield led her team at the plate, as she went 3-for-5 with the double and knocked in two. Also gathering three hits was Alexis McKnight, who was 3-for-3, while Megan Monzo was 2-for-4 with two RBIs. 

In the circle for the Wolfpack was Hope Hixson, who threw all eight inning to collect her first career win. She allowed seven hits and struck out seven in the game.

Game two had a similar start, as Allegany scored twice in the first to go in front, but Westmoreland took the lead right back. Three runs crossed in the bottom of the first, the final one coming on an RBI double by Maddie Lorince. In the second inning, Brianna McCulley laced a three-run double to highlight an eight-run outburst and the Wolfpack seized control and never looked back.

The offensive stars were plenty in the second game for Westmoreland, led by McCulley, who was 3-for-3 with four RBIs. Hixson also went 3-for-3 and collected three RBIs in the win, while McKnight had two hits and knocked in two, Lorince ripped two RBI doubles and Chelsey Frock and Julia Jumper both had two hits and one RBI apiece.

After the big first game at the plate, Bartlow, who also knocked in two runs in the nightcap, was the pitcher in game two and threw all five innings. She allowed just two hits and struck out five to pick up the win.

The Wolfpack will put their 2-0 record on the line Tuesday when they host Penn State-New Kensington Tuesday in a doubleheader scheduled to begin at 3 pm.
