WOLFPACK SETTLE FOR 5-5 TIE WITH SAINT VINCENT JV

LATROBE, Pa. - The Westmoreland County Community College baseball team took a 5-4 lead into the seventh inning, but Saint Vincent's JV team pushed a run across in the bottom of the seventh and after a scoreless eight inning, the teams were forced to settle for a 5-5 tie, as the game was called due to darkness.

The Wolfpack raced out to an early 3-0 lead by the second inning. They struck for a run in the first frame when Brandon McCormick stroked a double to bring in Nico Cuello. In the second inning, a single by Randall Joseph brough home Trevor Nelson and later in the inning, Mason Sarsfield crossed home after a wild pitch.

Saint Vincent chipped away at Westmoreland's lead over the next few innings, scoring once in the third, twice in the fourth inning to tie the game and then took the lead on a balk call in the fifth inning. The Wolfpack answered right back for a pair of runs in the sixth. Singles by Tyler Kuhns and Aaron Tumicki were followed by a single by Nate Lamark that brought in both runners to put the Wolfpack back in front 5-4.

In the last of the seventh, the Bearcats put the tying run on with a leadoff single. After a ground ball advanced the runner, an error brought in the tying and the game headed to extra innings. Westmoreland had a leadoff walk by Kuhns in the eighth inning, but he was stranded. Saint Vincent wouldn't be as fortunate, as McCormick retired the side in order, including two strikeouts, and the game was called with a 5-5 tie.

The Wolfpack bats managed nine hits by eight different players, with only McCormick getting two hits. Kuhns and Nelson also reached base twice with a single and walk each. On the hill, Nelson started and threw three solid innings, allowing one run on three hits. Kuhns also went three innings, giving two unearned runs on three hits with two strikeouts.

Westmoreland will return to the field Saturday when they host Finger Lakes Community College in the Wolfpack's home opener. First pitch is scheduled for 12 pm.
