WOLFPACK EARN SPLIT WITH JAMESTOWN CC

YOUNGWOOD, Pa. - The Westmoreland County Community College baseball team earned a split Wednesday in their doubleheader with Jamestown CCC, winning the first game 8-2 before dropping a 4-2 decision in the nightcap.

The Wolfpack jumped in front in the third inning of game with three runs. After a bases-loaded fielder's choice by Nico Cuello brought in the first run, back-to-back two-out RBI singles by Brandon McCormick and Nate Lamark pushed the Westmoreland lead to 3-0. The teams swapped runs after that, with Jamestown scoring once in the fourth, but a Lamark ground out scored a run to take the Wolfpack lead back to three. Jamestown hung around though and with a run in the top of the sixth, they had trimmed the Wolfpack lead to 4-2.

Westmoreland put the game with a four-run outburst in their half of the sixth inning. A pair of errors allowed the first three runs to score and the rally, which all happened with two outs, was capped when Lamark ripped an run-scoring double for his third RBI of the day and give the Wolfpack the 8-2 final margin.

The Wolfpack managed eight hits in the victory and also drew five walks. Lamark's two hits and three RBIs led the way, while Justin Brestensky had two hits and scored twice. Cuello also scored a pair of runs after drawing two of the walks. Picking up the win on the mound was Tyler Kuhns. He threw a complete game, scattering nine hits while allowing two runs and struck out six in the victory.

In game two, it was Jamestown who got off to the quick start with three runs in the first inning. The Wolfpack clipped one off their deficit in the bottom of the first with a two-out RBI single by McCormick. That's where the score remained until the fifth inning when Jamestown pushed a run across but that was answered by Westmoreland. Two-out walks to Brestensky and Kuhns was followed by Brestensky stealing third. Later when Kuhns broke for second, it induced a balk call and Brestensky came home to make it a 4-2 score.

That was as close as Westmoreland would get in the game however. After hitting into an inning-ending double play in the fourth inning, Wolfpack rallies in the sixth and seventh innings were both snuffed out by double plays and Jamestown used the three double plays in the game escaped with the two-run win. Kuhns led the offense by reaching base three times on a single and two walks, while Cuello also drew a pair of free passes.

On the mound, Brestensky came on in relief in the first inning and went on to throw 6 2/3 strong innings. He allowed just one run on five hits and struck out 13, including a run of seven in row between the second and fourth innings.

Westmoreland will get back on the field Saturday when they are scheduled to travel to Allegany College of Maryland for a doubleheader set to begin at 12 pm.
