WOLFPACK TAKE TWO FROM BUTLER

WOLFPACK TAKE TWO FROM BUTLER

BUTLER, Pa. - The Westmoreland County Community College baseball team closed WPCC play Saturday afternoon by sweeping a doubleheader at Butler CCC, taking game one by an 8-6 count before winning 6-5 in the second game.

In the first game, Westmoreland scored seven times in the fifth inning and pounded out 14 hits in claiming the 8-6 triumph. The decisive fifth inning was highlighted by RBI doubles from Brandon McCormick, Aaron Nickleson and Trevor Nelson. The offensive attack was also led by Tyler Kuhns, who went 4-for-4 and scored a run, as well as McCormick and Aaron Tumicki, who had two hits each.

Earning the win on the mound was Nelson, who went the distance and struck out two in earning his second victory of the season.

Game two saw Butler strike first with three runs in the opening inning. The Wolfpack responded by scoring four runs in the second inning to take the lead for good. Randall Joseph hit an RBI single and later stole home as part of a double steal with Justin Brestensky as part of the inning.

Joseph would drive in his second run of the game in the seventh with a ground out to extend Westmoreland's lead to 6-4 and that run was needed. Kuhns, who started the second game on the mound, went six solid innings but Butler loaded the bases with no outs in the seventh and McCormick was brought in to try to close it out. After a sacrifice fly made it a 6-5 Wolfpack lead, McCormick struck out the next batter. An infield single loaded the bases again, but McCormick finished off the sweep with a called third strike to preserve the win for Kuhns and the Wolfpack and earn his first save of the season.

Nelson had a pair of hits for the Wolfpack offense in addition to Joseph driving in a pair. Kuhns struck out six in his 6+ innings of work as he picked up his second victory of the year.
